BAXTER     2005     ‘Francis Fashauer Vineyard’     Mendocino Ridge

The Mendocino Ridge Appellation is a unique appellation, consisting of the coastal ridge-top areas above 1200 feet and the corresponding fog line.  It is this extra elevation that gives the Francis Fashauer Vineyard the necessary sunlight to
ripen Zinfandel in this cool and rugged climate.    High above the Anderson Valley, this south facing vineyard benefits from long days and warm nights.  The vines used to plant this vineyard come from the famed DuPratt Vineyard which is over 100 years old and lies less than a mile away.  Being particularly suited to the microclimate, this clone produces a Zinfandel unique to this appellation.  Leaner in style to its counterparts in warmer appellations, the Francis Fashauer Zinfandel produces a focused, fruit-forward  wine reminiscent of its Italian heritage.

The nose starts with strawberry and rose petal, giving way to dried herbs and wild berry.   Brimming with fresh raspberries, the mouth is fresh and intense with underlying flavors or red currents, black tea, and licorice.  Consistently a favorite amongst Italian wine lovers, the bright red fruit and elegant mouthfeel excite the senses, while the eternal finish brings a freshness and vibrancy often absent in Zinfandel from California.  The subtle apparent sweetness of this varietal makes is a natural choice for either cheese or desert, and it pairs perfectly with a blue cheese burger.

500 cases produced.
